1. Bleach and boiling water

If you've noticed maggots in your bin, make sure to dispose of any rubbish and then tackle the bin itself.

Pour boiling water over maggots to kill them instantly.

You can also add a cup of bleach to clean the area or hydrogen peroxide.

2. Salt them

Not only does adding salt to your bin help prevent flies and maggots, but it can kill them.

A hefty amount of table salt poured over the maggots will kill them, so make sure to sprinkle a thick layer.

3. Clean, clean, clean

Keeping your bin as clean and fresh smelling as possible will deter flies from laying their eggs.

Use white vinegar or vodka to clean as these are natural deterrents to flies.

Double bag your food waste, and try and clean your bin after every time it is emptied.

    4. Make your own mixture

One key maggot killer is permethrin, which can be found in spray form or you can make your own.

Simply mix four parts boiling water with one part permethrin dog shampoo.

Then slowly pour the mixture over any maggots.

One caveat is to make sure you wear gloves when using permethrin, as getting it in the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth can cause irritation.

Permethrin can also be fatal to cats and fish, so maybe opt for another method if you have pets.

    Prevention

After you've removed any maggots, you need to know how to prevent flies from getting to your rubbish, to prevent any more from being laid.

Try and take your bin bags outside as soon as they are full, and make sure your bags aren't overfilled to prevent breakage.

Make sure your bins - both outdoor and indoor - can close their lids all the way to prevent flies from getting in.

Never leave food uncovered in your home, especially during hot weather, as with many of us leaving windows open to cool down flies can readily access it and lay their eggs.

Keep your bins out of direct sunlight if possible, and if you're still seeing flies buy some insecticide strips inside the bin.

Another key tip is to sprinkle baking soda over the base of the bin before adding any bin bags as it prevents odours.

Bear in mind baking soda doesn't kill maggots, but will remove any odour left behind after you've removed them.
